01About

Good morning.
I'm Tristan, interested in |

I'm a second-year Engineering Science student at the University of Toronto working at the intersection of experimental physics, aerospace propulsion, and quantitative modeling. My research spans electroplating and optical instrumentation at the Cooper Lab, thermite ignition systems with BEARS at the Technical University of Berlin, and editorial review for the International Student Economics Journal, alongside independent computational work modeling mazes as graphs and applying statistical methods like ANOVA to experimental data.

I made the Dean's Honour List in Winter 2026, and graduated as Valedictorian and four-time class speaker from Nelson Mandela School Berlin with an IB score of 40/45, earning the DPG-Abiturpreis from the German Physical Society. Outside academics, I played violin in my school orchestra for five years, the last two as Concertmaster, and won the Ontario Gymnastics Provincial Championship for my age group in 2017 & 2018.

02Experience

Research Assistant

Cooper Lab, York University

  • Designed and executed a study of zincate-assisted copper and black nickel electroplating on aluminized Mylar across 6 zincate conditions, localizing a resulting deposition failure to the substrate via a successful aluminum foil control
  • Co-authored a technical report documenting the electroplating methodology, results, and failure analysis
  • Determined the solubility limit of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate in HPLC water, establishing an experimental value of 195 g per 100 mL against a 121–129 g literature reference range
  • Built an enclosure for an 80 lb off-axis parabolic mirror and assembled and aligned the LED illumination and lens stage of a schlieren optical system

Junior Editor, Econometrics & Data Science

International Student Economics Journal

  • Selected to join the editorial team responsible for evaluating quantitative and econometric submissions
  • Reviewing data and replication packages for reproducibility and methodological soundness

Aerospace Propulsion Researcher

BEARS, Technical University of Berlin

  • Analyzed thermite ignition behavior including burn-time and reliability characteristics
  • Designed and built a relay-controlled Arduino ignition system for engine testing
  • Applied energy balance and heat transfer analysis to improve ignition robustness
  • Calculated thermite power output and determined the arc sustain time required for complete combustion (0.2 s window between wires)

Private Mathematics Tutor

Heusser Mathematics Tutoring

  • Provide one-on-one mathematics tutoring for high school students following IB and German (Abitur/MSA) curricula, covering algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus
  • Develop custom practice worksheets and exams, each including a formula reference section, multi-section problem sets, and a full worked answer key

03Education

04Projects

Calcium Nitrate Solubility Experiment

Cooper Laboratory research report, Lassonde School of Engineering, York University.

  • Determined the solubility limit of calcium nitrate tetrahydrate in HPLC water by incremental addition, establishing an experimental value of 195 g per 100 mL against a 121–129 g literature reference range
  • Evaluated thermal and hygroscopic effects as partial explanations for the discrepancy with literature values

Zincate-Assisted Electroplating for Solar Absorbers

Cooper Laboratory research report, Lassonde School of Engineering, York University.

  • Designed and executed a study of zincate-assisted copper and black nickel electroplating on aluminized Mylar toward solar absorber applications across 6 zincate conditions, confirming substrate continuity beforehand and localizing the resulting deposition failure to the substrate via a successful aluminum foil control
  • Co-authored a technical report documenting the electroplating methodology, results, and failure analysis

Climbing Hold Cleaning Tool

Praxis II design project creating a tool to clean climbing holds between climbs without disrupting the natural atmosphere of the gym.

  • Reframed the problem from "cleaning climbing holds" to "cleaning holds between climbs", eliminating concepts that would interrupt the climbing experience
  • Explored parallel directions (tripod mount, electric toothbrush, exchangeable heads) and converged using Pugh charts and measurement matrices
  • Final prototype removed over 90% of chalk, set up in under 10 seconds, and operated below ambient gym noise (~55 dB)
Design Portfolio Poster One-Pager

Structural Bridge Design

Designed and constructed a matboard bridge for CIV102 that successfully withstood 400N of applied load through optimized truss geometry.

Food Wrap Packaging Design

Praxis I design project focused on reducing spillage in handheld food wrap packaging.

Micromouse Maze Algorithm Analysis

Independent research modeling Micromouse mazes as weighted graphs and adjacency matrices. Developed a pixelated maze representation and proved its graph-theoretic equivalence.

Designed and executed a controlled experiment studying light exposure effects on plant growth using Arduino-based sensors.

Currently Building

Neural Network-Driven Drone Navigation

Building a feedforward neural network from scratch using Python and NumPy to navigate a drone through 3D vertical mazes, deploying the learned policy onto a Crazyflie nano-drone.

Neuroevolution

Simulating Darwinian evolution in code: a 2D physics engine evolving virtual creatures whose neural-network 'brains' are optimized through natural selection rather than gradient descent.
